Lord of the Flies – Regents Park Open Air Theatre

Tuesday, June 07, 2011 - Tuesday, June 07, 2011

SCD was officially launched at our event at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre which was a great success! 130 people gathered at 6.30pm for a sumptuous buffet dinner set in the private dining room which opened up onto the lush green BBQ area of the theatre. Fairy lights twinkled and the room was abuzz with people talking about our new charity and what we hope to achieve. Everyone bought raffle tickets for the prize of 2 seats at Queen’s Tennis Championships on Thursday 9th June. Louise Potts from the Children’s Diabetes Department at UCLH drew the raffle and a delighted Anne Pierce won! As well as new supporters of the charity, the event also proved to be a good meeting place for specialists in the diabetes field – Dr Russell Viner who is head of the Adolescent Diabetes Department gave a wonderful introductory speech talking about what SCD means to the patients at UCLH. He was accompanied by 5 of the nurses in the Diabetes Department. Also present were Dr Ralph Abraham, founder of the London Diabetes and Lipid Centre and Dr Mary Pierce, a researcher specialising in Diabetes. Carolyn Goldhill, the founder of the charity, gave a welcome speech whilst the guests tucked into a meal of poached salmon, goats cheese tart and salads galore. The play started at 7.45pm and warm blankets were provided to keep our supporters warm! It was a huge success and was set on an amazing stage complete with a British Airways wrecked plane! In the interval, guests returned to the dining room for a welcome cup of hot coffee and key-lime pie before the theatre enthusiasts returned for the second act Luckily the rain held off throughout the evening and a good time was had by all.
